Mold Remediation and Toxic Mold Removal in Colorado Springs and Fort Collins, CO
Mold removal, remediation and inspection in Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, as well as other Colorado cities and towns, is a major part of AmeriDri’s disaster restoration business.
If you are currently dealing with a black or toxic mold issue in your home I’ve compiled a few things that will hopefully simplify the problem.
Mold is after all a necessary part of our ecosystem. They contribute to biological decay and return basic nutrients to the earth. But high mold levels indoors can have a serious negative effect on the people living or working there.
Many people know they have an area of the house where mold is growing. They can see it. Others suspect that they may have mold because there is that musty odor that mold often produces. There may also be an area of the home that stays wet all the time.
Indoor mold can do great harm to our physical bodies and our minds as well. Various symptoms of ill health, physical and mental, can result from prolonged exposure to high levels of harmful molds in your home.
And make no mistake; mold will grow in dry climates like Colorado Springs or Fort Collins as well as more humid areas.
Symptoms usually develop gradually and are very often vague, non-specific and difficult to diagnose.
Sufferers report laundry lists of complaints. Interestingly, a person living in a moldy environment may not always test positive for mold allergy.
If you suspect mold is a problem in your home, but aren’t certain, you first need to inspect every place in the house where water is used – around the showers, dishwasher, washing machine, all sinks, water heater, air conditioner drain, behind the refrigerator, etc. for moisture (minor and major).
If you don’t have an obvious problem area, pay particular attention to closets that share a wall with a bath or laundry room. Textured ceilings also grow mold very quickly with little moisture. Look for stains, including roof leaks.
In many areas, homes have basements that are wet all the time and therefore, are moldy all the time. You must realize that everything in a moldy basement is covered with mold spores, and when you bring these items upstairs into your living area, the mold spores comes with them.
Actually, most basements are connected through air ducting to the rest of the home anyway.
If you suspect that mold is a problem, you can always give us a call to have your home tested.
Here are some important points about mold (or mould) growth to know:
- Any and all visible mold should be considered a serious health risk. It should be eliminated immediately and the cause of the growth, usually moisture, should be resolved.
- The longer the exposure and the greater the dose (larger affected areas produce a greater number of spores), the higher your risk of serious health problems.
- Just because you don’t see active mold growth doesn’t mean you don’t have high levels of airborne mold.
- Living in a dry climate doesn’t mean you have no risk for mold exposure. Mold is associated with moisture, and any building can contain moisture, no matter what the climate is outdoors.
- If one member of your family is ill and none of the others are, it doesn’t mean you can rule out mold. Susceptibility and exposure times often vary from person to person.
Future posts will discuss the proper cleanup, or remediation, of mold.
